News & Views; January 21 2002 Welcome to the new year, and for us, the One Day Fours, the successful run has continued. Four straight wins have us sitting in third place on the table. There are four rounds to play until the finals, starting on March 2nd. Our latest win came last weekend against Takapuna A at home. We trounced them by 9 wickets, avenging our only defeat to them, in round 3 of the competition. It was the Jarrod Ngatuere show last week as he smashed 63 off less than 40 balls. 22 of them from the opening over! In the end we made no contest of the race to make 163. Chris Suanoa continued his great run with the bat, finishing not out 58. From the bowling department Gavin Daniels has come into form of late. A c.b of 4/20 last week was followed up with 4/31 this week. All in all, we're looking good, although the lack of any competitive games is a worry. Next victim - Grafton Utd. The first of two games on the road this coming saturday (Jan 26) In other news ... * The Papatoetoe First Grade team are One Day Champions for 2001/02. They defended the title they won last season in a close, but low scoring final last weekend at the rec. Defending an inadequate looking 148 on a slow pitch, the prems bowled beautifully to put the University middle order under pressure. Neil Ronaldson (Rolly) was at his best taking 3/23 from 10 misely overs. Varsity capitulated for 115, handing the title to the home team by 33 runs. Now for the two day title and promotion ... we hope! * The Hunters Inn have agreed to sponsor our team to the tune of some $6000. Details are still being worked out, but it certainly some exciting news for the team I'll report on how our other sides are going next week. For now, bring on the sun and some good cricket. ginge. |
